Terry Brooks (full name Terence Dean Brooks) was born on January 8, 1944. He grew up in the town of Sterling, Illinois. His father was a printing company owner, and his mother stayed at home. He earned an undergraduate degree in English literature at Hamilton College in 1966 and later attended the School of Law at Washington & Lee University to eventually earn a graduate degree. A writer since high school, Terry Brooks published his first novel, The Sword of Shannara in 1977. It became the first work of fiction ever to appear on the New York Times Trade Paperback Bestseller list, where it remained for five months. He has published twenty consecutive best-selling novels since. A practising attorney for many years, he now writes full-time. Currently Terry Brooks resides in Pacific Northwest and Hawaii, with his wife Judine.
