Gail Carson Levine was born on September 17, 1947 and grew up in New York City. She’s been writing all her life. In elementary school she was a member of the Scribble Scrabble Club and in high school she wrote poems that were published in an anthology of student poetry. However, she never wanted to be a writer, she wanted to be an actress and a painter. Gail’s interest in the theatre led to her first writing experience as an adult. She wrote a children’s musical Spacenapped, for which her husband David wrote the music and lyrics. Her painting brought her to writing for children. She took a class in writing and illustrating children's books and found that she was much more interested in the writing than in the illustrating.
