Cliff McNish was born in Sunderland, a city in the north-east of England. When he was only a toddler He and his family moved down south. This was not the last time the family moved. Cliff had to get used to a new school and friends all the time.

The first real book he read was C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew. He liked it so much that he read all the other 6 Narnian books right away. His mother and father separated when he was eight years old, and he and his brothers, sister Caron moved several times again after that. Eventually they settled down in Luton in Bedfordshire. After his A-levels and he went on to study History at York University. He left after 2 years, bored with the course and somewhat unhappy, without a degree and with a need to earn some money. His first job involved working in a warehouse. Later, he was moved into the accounts section of the company and ended up doing some work on the office computer. From there he applied for another computer job elsewhere, and another. It wasn’t until he'd been working in the computing industry for about fifteen years that it occurred to him to write anything, and even then it had nothing to do with him; it was all his daughter’s fault.
